About the Program
The Interactive Design Program at Capilano University is one of the leading web design programs in British Columbia. It is taught by industry professionals who have years of experience in working with digital media. Students who graduate from this two-year, full-time program receive an Interactive Design diploma, and are offered promising career prospects working with web professionals. Throughout the course of the program, students will work on real world projects, develop a digital portfolio, and gain work experience during a six-week work practicum. Upon leaving the program, students have the skills and opportunities to plan, optimize, build, and maintain websites for clients.
In the first year of the program, students are trained in utilizing the technologies needed to work in the web design field. They learn how to use the Adobe Creative Suite (including Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver) along with basic code development like HTML and CSS. Students also begin introductory courses on information design and architecture, usability design and testing, and project management, where they learn the best practices in creating user-friendly websites and working with clients.
In the second year of the program, students are given the chance to hone their abilities on a specialized subject area and are given the chance to work more independently. They also learn advanced web development and database design using PHP and MySQL. By participating in a 6-week long practicum at a web design agency, students develop practical skills and job experience in the industry before graduation.
